Candidate Killed in Storm; W. Va GOP Legislative Candidate Killed by Falling Tree Limb
Hurricane Sandy has taken a toll on human lives during its path from the Caribbean and up the eastern seaboard.
One of three deaths reported in West Virginia is a political candidate.
John Rose Sr., a legislative candidate from W.Va., was killed this week during Hurricane Sandy.
According to the Associated Press, George Rose, son of the 60-year-old GOP candidate, said his father was at his Barbour Country farm checking fences on Tuesday when a broken tree branch fell on him.
Rose Sr. was a Republican candidate for the House of Delegates.
In a press release on Wednesday, W. Va. Secretary of State Natalie E. Tennant said her thoughts and prayers are with Rose's family during this tragic time.
With Election Day fast approaching, there was no time to remove Rose's name from the ballot, according to WDTV. However, voters in Rose's 47th Delegate District are being informed with signs posted within the precincts.
With Rose's name still on the ballot, there's a chance he can win. This means the Republican Party executive committee of Barbour County will have to choose three candidates and Governor Earl Ray Tomblin will select one of them as the nominee for House District 47.
Rose's death opens a special write-in candidate filing period, but the forms must be received by the Secretary of State's Office before 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1.
The other deaths in W.Va were a 40-year-old woman who passed away in a car accident caused by the storm on Monday as well as a man in his 60's that died shoveling snow on Tuesday.
At least 46 people were killed during Hurricane Sandy in the U.S., according to MSNBC .
