The Knicks-Nets basketball game that was scheduled for Thursday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn has been post-poned.

Although the NBA announced on Tuesday that the game will still go on, Mayor Bloomberg told them otherwise after learning of the damage from Hurricane Sandy.

"Mayor Bloomberg informed us this afternoon that after further analysis of the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy that he felt it was in the best interest of the city of New York, the trams and our fans that we postpone the Knicks-Nets game scheduled for Thursday night," NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with all those affected by this devastating storm."

"I'm sorry about the game," Bloomberg said according to USA Today.

"I know lots of people will be disappointed ...The players will be disappointed."

The Barclays Center is located above a subway station and commuter rail terminal where most of the mass transit in New York is still out.

Bloomberg said that transportation to the game would be difficult.

"It's a great stadium, it would have been a great fame but the bottom line is there is not a lot of mass transit. Our police have plenty of other things to do," Bloomberg said.

The Barclays Center has become the new home of the New Jersey Nets, who have returned professional sports to Brooklyn since the Dodgers left the borough in 1957.

Thursday would have been the season opener for the Nets and the Knicks, with TNT airing at the location for the first time.

"Definitely disappointed we won't get to play the home game opener against the Knicks," Deron Williams, Nets point guard told ESPN.

So far, there is no word on the Knicks game scheduled for Friday at Madison Square Garden against Miami.

Bloomberg mentioned that the city will work with the NBA league to provide extra bus services to Saturday's game if subways are still not operating.

The Nets are also reportedly scheduled to play in Toronto on Saturday night.
