The 3DS has become the latest Nintendo system to sell more than 15 million units in the U.S., the company announced today.

The 3DS family of systems now has quite a few different models available, perhaps more than any of Nintendo's hardware before it. The original 3DS has since been joined by the 3DS XL, 2DS, and now the New 3DS XL (which in Japan also comes in two sizes, but only the XL model is offered in the U.S.).

All of these count toward the 15 million unit total, which is impressive on its own. The first 3DS launched in 2011, while the most recent New 3DS XL model came to the U.S. in February of this year. Worldwide, the 3DS has sold more than 52 million units. Nintendo, while pleased with the numbers, is looking toward the future--especially since it only recently launched the New 3DS XL hardware, which boosts the systems power.

"While crossing 15 million units is certainly a significant milestone, we are equally excited about the new momentum we've created in 2015 thanks to new hardware and an unrivaled library of software," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing in a prepared statement. "With more great games on the way and a hardware system for every type of gamer, 2015 is shaping up to be one of the stronger years yet for Nintendo 3DS in the United States."
