James Holmes, Colorado Movie Theater Shooter Hospitalized After Suicide Attempts
James Holmes, the suspect of the Colorado movie theater massacre, reportedly injured himself in a series of "half-hearted" suicide attempts, leading him to miss his appearance in court on Thursday.
According to The Daily News, the man who claimed to be the "Joker" from "Batman" was arrested after killing 12 people at a midnight movie theater showing of the latest move in the Batman Franchise on July 20.
According the local CBS News Station in Denver, Holmes reportedly slammed himself into a jail cell wall, in one of his suicide attempts. In another attempt to kill himself, the 24-year-old suspect threw himself on the floor from his jailhouse bed.
The Daily News reported that Holmes' attorney gave no details about his health, but she did say that his condition "renders him unable to be present in court."
"It's not as simple as a migraine, and it's not something that will resolve by tomorrow morning," defense attorney Tamara Brady explained.
District Judge William B. Sylvester postponed the Thursday hearing until Dec. 10 after Brady requested to delay the court hearing on Wednesday. The hearing was scheduled to discuss pretrial motions and media requests for information under state open records laws, CBS News reported.
The key issue in this case is Holmes' mental health - although he has yet to enter an insanity plea. The defense has not determined if Holmes was temporarily insane when he allegedly killed the 12 people at the Aurora, Colorado movie theater and injured 58 more.
In his previous court appearances, Holmes appeared alternately dazed and alert. It is unknown whether or not he is on any kind of medication.
The 24-year-old was reportedly seeing a psychiatrist before dying his hair a bright orange, arming himself to the teeth and unleashing his assault at "The Dark Knight" screening.
