Baby on Runway; Arizona Mom Who Drove Baby on Airport Runway May Have Mental Illness
An Arizona mom is in trouble after driving onto an airport runway with her baby in the car.
The incident took place at the Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix on Thursday night when 21-year-old Koko Nicole Anderson was caught by police on the runway.
Anderson's 2-month old baby son was found in the backseat of the car. The mother claimed she was unaware the child was with her at the time.
The young mom rammed the partially closed runway gate and sped onto the runway. She was found with a pacifier in her mouth when police stopped her. Anderson was arrested for suspicion of aggravated DUI and criminal damage estimated around $20,000.
Bebe Anderson, the arrested woman's mother, told the Associated Press that she doesn't believe her daughter was on drugs or under the influence of alcohol.
"She's not going to be stable until she gets on medication," Bebe Anderson said, noting her daughter's history of mental illness and bi-polar disorder. "I'm so scared. I'm at a loss of how to help her. I'm just really hoping someone can advocate for her."
The baby boy was taken by Child Protective Services and given to another family member.
"We don't believe her intent was to harm here," Sgt. Trent Crump said, as reported by the Arizona Daily Star. "We believe its impairment and poor decision making,"
The security breach by the reckless mother has raised security concerns at airports around the country.
"Such incidents are troublesome because a vehicle that crashed into a jetliner landing or taking off could cause a catastrophe, whether it was an intoxicated driver behind the wheel or a terrorist," Jeff Price, an aviation professor at the Metropolitan State University of Denver and former assistant security director at Denver International Airport, told AP.
No flights were delayed at the Arizona airport because of the incident.
