James Holmes Guilty: 'Dark Knight' Theater Gunman Convicted In 2012 Colorado Massacre, Death Penalty A 'Possibility' [PHOTO]
The man who committed a chilling 2012 attack on those attending a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in a Colorado theater back in 2012 has been convicted on all counts of the crime after a jury rejected his defense arguments that he was insane and suffering from delusions.
Jurors took roughly 13 hours over the course of a full day and a half to review all 165 charges in the massacre which left 12 dead and dozens of other wounded, and will also decide on a future date if Holmes will be handed the death penalty for his crimes.
It comes nearly three years after Holmes unleashed real-life carnage on a theater of moviegoers by dressing in head-to-toe body armor, and sneaking in through an emergency exit of the darkened theater. Among his victims were two active-duty servicemen, a single mom, a man celebrating his 27th birthday and an aspiring broadcaster who had survived a mall shooting in Toronto a mere month prior.
Prosecutors argued that Holmes knew exactly what he was doing when he gunned down those in the theater, aiming at those who fled, and painted him as a calculated killer who was hoping to make a move to make himself remembered.
More than 200 witnessed were called over the two month trial, with more than 70 survivors.
Holmes also booby-trapped his apartment in an attempt to hopefully divert first responders from the theater.
His defense attorneys argued that Holmes was suffering schizophrenia at the time and was in the midst of a severe psychotic breakdown at the time.
During the sentencing phase, his attorneys will present factors they hope can save his life, which are alleged to include more evidence of mental illness and a more sympathetic portrayal of his childhood. Prosecutors are set to make a case for the death penalty.
