Wii Mini Release Date: Nintendo Launches $99 Mini In Canada On Dec. 7
There's a new console coming out for Nintendo, but only in Canada.
The Wii Mini was announced on Nintendo's website on Tuesday, showing off a compact version of the company's big seller. The new console will be released on Dec. 7 for the mini price of $99.
The smaller size isn't the only change to the system, as it doesn't come with internet connectivity. Two versions will be released in both black and red, and Nintendo said the console can play over 1,300 Wii games. However, unlike the original, it can't play Nintendo GameCube games.
The Wii Mini comes with a Wii Remote Plus controller and Nunchuk controller. Nintendo is advertising the Wii Mini as a family-friendly device for first-time users who want to experience a motion-controlled gaming experience.
"There are games in the Wii library for every type of player," Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada's vice president, said in a statement. "Wii Mini is a great gift for the holidays that brings everyone in the family together to play."
According to the website for Best Buy Canada, the retailer will start taking pre-orders for the Wii Mini later on Tuesday.
Americans can still enjoy Nintendo's new Wii U, which has already sold around 400,000 units. The Wii U is a handheld game tablet and controller with two versions available: a basic version for $299 as well as a "deluxe" for $349 that includes more memory, a stand and charger for the GamePad, and "NintendoLand" game.
The Nintendo GamePad has a 6.2-inch touchscreen and is designed with features such as showing additional single player content as well as having one player use a TV screen and another use the pad.
The Wii U was built to enhance the experience of Nintendo's widely successful Wii console, which has sold around 100 million units internationally since its debute in 2006.
