Apple once again dominates the smartphone market.

Sales of the company's latest iPhone 5 helped make it the bestselling smartphone brand and made iOS the dominant operating system in the United States.

The recent information came from market research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech who says that Android comes second to the popularity of Apple.

Kantar announced on Tuesday that Apple phones have a 48.1 percent share of the U.S. smartphone market. Android comes in at a close second with 46.7 percent.

The research is based off of a combination of consumer surveys and third party reports from around 1.3 million customers around the world that take place every few weeks.

"The last time we saw iOS overatake Android in the U.S. was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods," said Dominic Sunnebo, global consumer insight director at Kantar, according to the Examiner. "This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3% and achieve its highest ever share of the U.S. smartphone market within the next two periods."

During Black Friday AT&T offered refurbished iPhone 5 deals priced at $99, but they're now offering a refurbished version of the iPhone 5 starting at $249.99 with a two year contract.

The iPhone 5 has features like a 4-inch retina display, an A6 chip for excelled CPU performance, an 8 MP iSight camera, and Apple's latest iOS 6.

Apple struggled at first to match thevsupply with the increased demand for their latest phone.

According to PCMag, Apple CEO Tim Cook commented on the situation in a statement: "Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible. While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date."

The loyalty of Apple customers is one of the biggest factors that have routinely put the company at the top of the smartphone market.
