Child Missing Cancer Ward; Girl's Life in Danger While Police Search Continues
Police in Arizona are on the lookout for a child that has gone missing from a cancer ward.
The child patient, identified only as Emily, is 11-years-old and was last seen at the Phoenix Children's Hospital with her mother on Wednesday Nov. 28. Emily left the hospital the day before her scheduled discharge date and doctors are concerned for Emily's life as she is in danger of not receiving her required medical care.
The young girl has a catheter that was placed in her heart that could become infected if not attended to properly. There is a strong possibility that she may die if she does not return to the hospital for treatment.
"In this particular case, we have again an 11-year-old girl who can't really decide for herself," said Sgt. Steve Martos , as reported by ABC News. "Her parents are now removing her from the hospital and putting her in danger by not providing that last bit of medical attention that she needs."
A representative for the Phoenix Children's Hospital said that Emily's mom, Norma, took an IV out of the girl's arm and removed her from her hospital bed. Surveillance footage apparently shows Norma with her daughter and a young boy walk out of the Arizona hospital on Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. to depart in a black van. It's unknown exactly why Emily's mother removed her from the hospital before her scheduled release.
Police are searching for the black van and Emily's mother, whose last name is withheld for security reasons. The family, originally from Mexico, doesn't have an Arizona address listed on records which increases the problem local authorities have in tracking down the missing girl.
Emily suffers from leukemia. She also recently lost and arm that required amputation and was hospitalized for a severe infection.
