The palace confirmed Monday that the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is pregnant with her first child.

St. James' Palace made the announcement on Monday and added that the pregnancy "is in its very early stages."

E! New reported that Middleton was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London on Monday due to "suffering hyperemesis gravidarum," which is in other words morning sickness. The palace also said, "Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter."

The announcement about Middleton's pregnancy only confirmed what reports have been speculating for a while now. In September, an insider confirmed to Star magazine (via Hollywood Life), the following: "Friends say Kate is convinced it's happened, and while she and William are keeping the news close to the vest, they're delirious with joy."

In the same month, reports called into question Middleton's choice of water over wine during a state banquet in Singapore. She then attended a British Gala Reception and reportedly only drank water again.

Then in November, the magazine New Idea featured a cover story about Middleton with the headline "Her oldest friend reveals Kate's Pregnant: What her closest pals know..." Jessica Hay, a friend of Middleton's, told the magazine that the royal couple was "planning to make an announcement in December" and that Middleton is pregnant. Hay also said that Middleton would prefer her first child to be a boy because "it seems very traditional."

Regardless of the baby's gender, he or she is a first-born and therefore next in line to the throne after Prince William, who follows his father Prince Charles.

The Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William wed in April 2011 in a lavish and televised affair that was watched by viewers around the world.
