'American Horror Story' Emmys: Why Were These 'Hotel' Actors Not Submitted? [VIDEO]
The cast of FX's American Horror Story: Hotel was large and full of strong actors, but not everyone was submitted for the Emmys this year.
The Television Academy put this year's nominating ballots online on Monday, revealing the shows, actors, writers, directors and tech workers eligible to be nominated. The cast and crew of American Horror Story were among these submissions and while many actors are on the ballot, some are curiously not.
Wes Bentley (who played John Lowe) and Matt Bomer (Donovan) are on the ballot for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, while Lady Gaga (The Countess) is being submitted for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
As for the supporting categories, Denis O'Hare (Liz Taylor), Evan Peters (James Patrick March), Finn Wittrock (Tristan Duffy and Valentino) were submitted in Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, while Angela Bassett (Ramona Royale), Kathy Bates (Iris), Sarah Paulson (Hypodermic Sally and Billie Dean Howard) and Mare Winningham (Miss Evers) were submitted in Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.
Missing from the ballot are Chloë Sevigny (Alex Lowe) and Cheyenne Jackson (Will Drake), despite both being in the main credits of Hotel. It may be understandable that Jackson wasn't submitted considering his relative lack of screentime, but Sevigny had her own storyline throughout the season. There is no clear indication as to why neither actor was submitted.
As for other major categories, Hotel was submitted for Outstanding Limited Series, the first episode, "Checking In," was submitted for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special, and the episodes "Flicker" and "She Wants Revenge" were submitted for Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special.
It remains to be seen if American Horror Story: Hotel will have a good showing at the Emmys, but past seasons of AHS have shown that voters like the show. Jessica Lange has won twice (for Murder House and Coven), James Cromwell won for Asylum and Bates won for Coven. The series has racked up double digit nomination totals every single season.
The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 14.
