‘Divergent’ star Shailene Woodley arrested for trespassing during protest
Shailene Woodley has just been arrested for criminal trespassing after joining a protest in North Dakota. How would this affect the actress?
Woodley joined a protest in opposition to the vast oil pipeline venture being done in North Dakota, reported BBC. The rally had a total of 200 protesters and their demonstration was broadcasted live on Facebook.
The 24-year-old actress was arrested in the said rally along with 26 other protesters, police disclosed. All the arrested individuals were charged with criminal trespassing and causing a riot.
However, the "Divergent" star was saying something different in the Facebook live footage she posted when she got arrested, said CNN.
Woodley spoke in the video saying, "I don't know if you guys just heard me, but I was walking back to my RV, which is right there so that we can go back to camp peacefully and they grabbed me by my jacket and said that I was not allowed to continue."
The California-native actress recounted that the police had big batons and guns plus zip ties. The authorities did not want to let Woodley go, she said.
The deputy was also heard talking with Woodley, based on the video. "You are going to be placed under arrest for criminal trespassing," he told her.
"The Fault in Our Stars" actress then asked him why she was the only one being arrested and none from the other protesters on site was.
The oil pipeline project was started in North Dakota but it will pass across four states. This drew many criticisms especially from the Native Americans who believe that the construction could devastate their tribal lands. In addition, many fear the danger that the Missouri River might get contaminated if and when the pipeline breaks.
Protests have intensified over the weeks. Many protesters gave accounts that security in the area use force to keep them at bay. Tear gas and pepper spray were being used at them.
At the moment, Shailene Woodley's publicist has spoken on her behalf declaring that the actress appreciates the immense support given to her, but more notably, to the fight versus the construction of the oil pipeline.
