Isabel Torres Dead At 52: HBO's 'Veneno' Actress' Tragic Health Condition Before Death Revealed
Isabel Torres, a famous Spanish actress, popularly known for taking the role of transgender icon La Veneno on HBO's "La Veneno," has passed away at the age of 52; what was her cause of death?
According to Variety, her official Instagram account shared a black image with white text to confirm her death.
The statement reads, "Although her family and friends feel her loss deeply, we know that wherever she goes, she will have fun as only she knows how." (the post was written in Spanish and was translated into English by the outlet.)
The family thanked Torres' fans for their support, affection, and concern as she died feeling "loved and supported." The post also added a black and white photo of the actress on the second page. (check out the post above)
Although the Instagram photo did not reveal her cause of death, Spanish media reports noted that Torres initially announced on social media that she was battling lung cancer.
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, in 1969, Torres made history in the mid-1990s for being the first transgender person in the Canary Islands to legally change her name and gender marking in her legal papers.
She also became the first trans woman contender for the famed Las Palmas Carnival Queen title.
Torres' acting career skyrocketed in 2020 when she starred as Cristina Ortiz, AKA La Veneno, on HBO's "Veneno."
According to TIME Magazine, the series revolves around the Spanish trans icon who rose to fame after catching audiences' attention following her interview with a journalist around Parque del Oeste in Madrid, Spain.
After her random interview, she later accepted acting gigs, became a singer and model, and even one of the most recognizable trans people in the country.
The series features three transgender actresses, one of which was Torres, to portray three different stages of La Veneno's life.
Per creators Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrosi, the series is an homage to the icon as well as the pop culture around the 1990s because it was the story they heard growing up as young gay men.
"These types of stories are not only for LGBTQ people, they transcend to other people, because other people want to hear our stories too," the creators said in an interview.
La Veneno passed away in 2016 at the age of 52 after an accidental fall.
