WrestleMania 40 Predictions: The Rock's WWE Return Will End With Cody Rhodes Match
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's WWE comeback may be coming to an end.
According to the Bleacher Report, Johnson, 51, will conclude his return to the WWE this weekend at WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he will team up with Roman Reigns against Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins on night one (Saturday) of the two-day event.
After the show, Johnson will "jump right into" filming a biopic about MMA legend Mark Kerr titled "The Smashing Machine," ESPN's Mike Coppinger and Marc Raimondi reported.
But the Bleacher Report suggested that WrestleMania seemed to be laying the groundwork for a potential singles showdown between Johnson and Rhodes.
The outcome of the tag team match will affect how night two will play out on Sunday.
If Rhodes and Rollins win the match, The Bloodline will be barred from being ringside for the main event match between Reigns and Rhodes for the undisputed universal title on night two.
But if The Rock and Reigns emerge victorious on night one, the Reigns vs. Rhodes match will be fought under Bloodline rules.
The Bloodline is the team led by Reigns and includes The Rock as well as their family members Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa.
Under the Bloodline rules, The Rock is expected to do "everything" he can to prevent Rhodes from becoming the next undisputed WWE universal champion, according to USA Today.
Rollins is also set to defend his world heavyweight championship title against Drew McIntyre on night two.
It is unclear if a match between Johnson and his cousin and undisputed WWE universal champion Reigns will happen anytime soon.
Johnson made a surprise return to the WWE for the first time in a decade in January, appearing to set up a possible bout against Reigns.
However, last month, it was confirmed that Johnson and Reigns will team up to face Rhodes and Rollins in the main event of night one of WrestleMania 40.
Johnson has been training for his first full-length match in 11 years since early February.
He told ESPN that he has been focusing more on the live-action types of "timing" scenarios in his training.
"Suplexes, a launch off the top rope, a catch, like bodies hitting bodies," Johnson said. "It's things like that that you have to do and have to prepare for. And you're getting bruised up, you're hitting the ropes. It comes back fairly quick. ... It's like riding a bike."
The actor's training for WrestleMania 40 also doubled as preparation for his portrayal of the MMA legend.
"I know he is training and dieting and working out like a maniac, and I think this was strategic by design," Brian Gewirtz, the senior vice president at Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions, told ESPN.
Explaining why he chose to return to the WWE this year, Johnson told the sports outlet in February, "It felt like the timing of this was going to work out good. And it felt like the timing was going to work out in our favor."
The 40th annual WrestleMania will take place at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia this weekend.
WrestleMania 40 will stream live on Peacock at 7 p.m. EDT/4 p.m. PT on both Saturday and Sunday.
