Meghan Markle Wanted Free Clothes From Victoria Beckham; 'Deluded' To Think She's Above Designer In Status: New Book
Meghan Markle allegedly wanted to be as posh as Victoria Beckham, according to a new book.
Royal biographer and author Tom Bower revisited Markle and Victoria's friendship and falling out in his new book, "The House of Beckham." According to Bower, the former actress allegedly asked the Spice-Girls-turned-fashion designer for free handbags and clothes. However, her request was "vetoed by [Buckingham] Palace for being against their rules," Bower wrote, per the New York Post.
Markle and Beckham had remained good friends. Markle even stayed at their Beverly Hills home once during a trip to Los Angeles. However, Bower claimed that "a member of Victoria's staff" offered beauty advice to Markle, suggesting the best facials and hairdresser in London when he got engaged to Prince Harry, and the story leaked to the press.
"Only after The Sun reported how Victoria had given Meghan makeup advice did the relationship between the two ambitious women crash," Bower wrote, noting that Markle was sensitive to the "media's probing into her unusual past."
"Harry was ordered to complain to David Beckham," Bower continued.
David reportedly asked his wife how The Sun got the story, and the designer denied tipping a tabloid. Instead, she blamed it on a beautician.
The tension continued to build up when the Sussexes invited the Beckhams to their 2018 royal wedding but not to the dinner reception attended by other celebrities, including George and Amal Clooney. Victoria allegedly felt "insulted."
Their strained relationship allegedly worsened when the Beckhams did not invite Prince Harry and Markle to their son Brooklyn's lavish Palm wedding to Nicola Peltz in 2022.
Bower also claimed that the Sussexes and Beckhams' tainted friendship got worse when David maintained his friendship with Prince William.
"For the Sussexes, who were already complaining about their unequal status and wealth compared to the Cambridges, the sight of Becks with William was annoying," Bower added, per Life & Style.
Markle also allegedly grew "irritated" by the Beckhams' wealth, and she thought her royal status would elevate her social status ranking against Victoria.
"In Meghan's celebrity world, ranking depended on wealth and fame. As a seasoned operator, Meghan deluded herself that her status in the royal family placed her above Victoria in the social pecking order," Tom wrote, later noting, "[Meghan and Harry] owned five homes, had constant access to private jets, invitations to sail on yachts and much more money. And she was soon to be a duchess."
"The House of Beckham" is already available in the United Kingdom and the United States.
