Kate Middleton asked Meghan Markle about her balcony debut, and the latter responded with a joke.

Last week, the Princess of Wales, who had been missing for months since announcing her cancer diagnosis, made her first public outing at Trooping the Colour. She joined King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William and their three children -- Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6 -- on the balcony. Following the gathering, Middleton and Markle's exchange about the same event resurfaced.

According to Prince Harry in his 2023 memoir, "Spare," things were awkward after Markle made her balcony debut in 2018. The former actress joined the royal family on the balcony to watch the RAF flypast and wave to the crowd just weeks after her royal wedding to Prince Harry.

Markle chatted with the Prince and Princess of Wales and Queen Camilla when they were inside Buckingham Palace. Things were allegedly tense behind the scenes.

Middleton asked Markle her thoughts about her first Trooping the Colour and the latter replied, "Colourful." The "Suits" star allegedly only wanted to lighten the mood, but her lighthearted response didn't receive a positive reaction.

"A yawning silence threatened to swallow us all whole," Prince Harry added, per the Mirror.

In his book, Prince Harry detailed the alleged tension between the royal family members, especially Prince William and Middleton's purported behavior toward his wife. For instance, Prince Harry claimed that Middleton had issues with Markle's wedding plans.

He also shared the text exchange between the two duchesses where Middleton complained about the bridesmaid dresses, which left Markle sobbing on the floor. Additionally, the Duke of Sussex claimed that Middleton grimaced when Markle borrowed her lip gloss.

Additionally, he alleged that his big brother called Markle "difficult." He also detailed the alleged physical altercation that occurred following a heated argument.

"He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog's bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me. I lay there for a moment, dazed, then got to my feet and told him to get out," Prince Harry wrote.

He also alleged that the heir apparent urged him to hit him back. Prince William allegedly left but returned "looking regretful and apologised."

In the same book, Prince Harry shared that his big brother had warned him to slow down on his romance with Markle because they were going too fast. He decided to marry her after less than a year of dating.

Jennie Bond, royal commentator and former BBC royal correspondent, said Prince William was right to warn Prince Harry. According to Bond, the marriages that survived in the royal family had long courtships, like Prince William and Middleton. Another example was Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who "more or less lived together before marriage."
