Kate Middleton was so confident about being romantically involved with the future king that she once said Prince William was "lucky" to be dating her.

Daniela Elser, a royal correspondent at News.com.au, revisited Prince William and Middleton's first couple photo, which was released 19 years ago. According to her, the snap was captured by either Middleton's mom, Carole, or dad, Michael. The photo was taken when they had just graduated from the university and showed them wrapping their arms around each other, looking "relaxed, delighted, affectionate."

Elser also recounted the Prince and Princess of Wales' early days of dating. She shared a story about when Middleton was told she was "lucky" to be going out with the future king, and she responded bluntly.

"There is a story that goes around semi-regularly, that in the aughties when William and Kate were in their 20s and dating, that someone was enthusing about how lucky she was to have snaffled the affections of a prince only for Kate to reply, 'he's lucky to be dating me,'" Elser wrote.

Elser agreed with Middleton that the Duke of Cambridge was "lucky" to have her. She added that the monarchy was as lucky to have Middleton.

Claudia Joseph, a fashion and showbusiness journalist and investigative reporter, penned the book "Kate: Kate Middleton: Princess in Waiting." In the publication, she shared the same story Elser mentioned.

Middleton reportedly "memorably retorted: 'He's so lucky to be going with me,'" while talking about the heir apparent dating her.

Allison Pearson, a Welsh author, also spoke about the same story. According to her, Prince William was expected to choose his bride from a select group of well-bred young ladies. The top favorites were Davina Duckworth-Chad and Isabella Amaryllis Charlotte Anstruther-Gough-Calthorpe. One time, a friend at St. Andrews reportedly told Middleton she was "lucky" to date the royal. However, she just smiled and said, "He's lucky to have me."

Pearson believed Middleton's confidence was down to how her parents raised her. Like Elser, Pearson said Prince William and the country were lucky to have Middleton. The Duchess of Cambridge is strong but not a pushover and doesn't steal the spotlight from her husband. Pearson was told that King Charles and Princess Diana's marital strife allegedly started from the said issue -- competing in the public limelight.

"The best royal marriages are when the consort keeps her head down," one member of the royal circle told Pearson.
