'Top Chef's' Shirley Chung Overlooked Early Tongue Cancer Symptoms Due To Busy Schedule After Stage 4 Diagnosis
Shirley Chung, a former 'Top Chef' contestant, revealed her stage 4 tongue cancer diagnosis through a heartfelt video on Instagram.
Chung, who appeared in the show's 11th season, announced that doctors diagnosed her in December. The video showed her and her partner, Jimmy Lee, shaving their heads, symbolizing their battle against the illness.
Her diagnosis followed several dental issues, including severe tongue biting and a fractured tooth, initially thought to be due to teeth grinding. "We thought it was because I am a heavy teeth grinder. And I was too busy to see an EMT specialist," she wrote.
In May, Chung discovered ulcers and a tumor under her tongue. "A few days later, I was diagnosed with stage 4 tongue cancer, as cancer cells had also spread into my lymph nodes," she shared.
Chung remained calm upon hearing the diagnosis, focusing on prompt testing and treatment. However, the gravity of her situation hit hard on June 2 when her doctor discussed treatment options, including the complete removal of her tongue.
"All I heard was 'option 1, surgery, 100% removal of your tongue'... Jimmy was holding it together for both of us, asking if we have any option that I can keep my tongue and the survival rates," she recounted.
Chung chose a less drastic treatment plan offered by the University of Chicago, involving radiation and chemo, to preserve her tongue.
"I'm a fighter, I'm a chef, I believe I can be that unicorn too," she stated.
Having completed six weeks of chemotherapy, she reported improvements in her condition, including reduced tumor size and better speech. "I am learning to lean on others, to let go, to be more vulnerable," she expressed.
Chung concluded with a message of hope, "I am learning that it's okay not to be okay 100% of the time. Your love and support will carry me through. Cheer me on; Shirley Chung 2.0 will be reborn in 2025!"
