'Supernatural' Season 9 Spoilers: New Post-Hiatus Trailer Hints At Sam's Recovery, Previews Garth's Return [VIDEO]
There is only one week left before Supernatural returns form its midseason hiatus, and fans now have a new trailer to tide them over.
With clips from several upcoming episodes, the recently released footage provides short glimpses of what's to come for the Winchester brothers and their comrades.
Team Free Will's most pressing predicament - the possession of Sam (Jared Padalecki) - stems from Dean's (Jensen Ackles) previous decisions to try and heal Sam by tricking him into being a vessel for the angel Ezekiel. His good intentions turned sour, however, when it turns out good old Zeke was actually an angel named Gadreel who, once he had taken control of Sammy's meat suit, teamed up with Metatron (Curtis Armstrong) to off the prophet Kevin Tran (Osric Chau). Now that everything has gone sideways, Dean and Castiel (Misha Collins) must pick up the pieces by entrusting the duplicitous King of Hell (Mark Sheppard) to remove Gadreel from Sam.
"[Dean] made these two crucial decisions that affected the boys' mythology and to watch particularly the second one turn into a heartbreaking failure is really what's going to be driving Dean from here on out in the season, starting with he's going to do whatever it takes to track down this angel and eject him from Sam," said executive producer Jeremy Carver, according to Entertainment Weekly. "And that's going to lead him to making alliances that he never thought he'd be forced to make. But he'll do anything, basically, to try to right what he, I guess, considers one of the biggest mistakes he's ever made."
While Sam's angelic exorcism and Crowley's release form the Bunker's dungeon will inform much of the second half of season 9 - including the search for a means to kill Abaddon (Alaina Huffman) - a few stand alone episodes will bring back some old familiar faces.
Garth (DJ Qualls), who hasn't been seen since last season, will finaly resurface. Previously tasked with checking up on Kevin, the quirky hunter will awake in a Wisconsin hospital bed very certain that he has died.
"We're going to get an answer to where the heck Garth (DJ Qualls) has been this whole time and viewers will remember he sort of went AWOL when put in charge of guarding Kevin back in season 8 and we'll answer this question, and I think it will be surprising," Carver told Entertainment Weekly. "And there will be hugs."
Supernatural will return on Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. ET on the CW. Click here for a preview of the series first episode back, "Road Trip."
