Fans have embraced the Hayley and Elijah romance on The Originals, but for the most part Klaus has stayed out of the dating pool this season.

While The Originals has toyed with a potential relationship between Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Cami (Leah Pipes), it seems the hybrid's most well-received connection is still the one he shared with Caroline (Candice Accola) during his days on The Vampire Diaries. In fact, showrunners went so far as to appease fans by letting the two hook up during the first The Vampire Diaries crossover episode.

For the most part, however, it seems the writers intend to keep Klaus alone as part of his tortured image. On Dec. 15 People (featured below) asked Morgan who he'd choose for Klaus to be involved with romantically and his answer was pretty telling. "I think he's a bit of a loner to be honest," he said of Klaus.

The semi-forbidden relationship between Klaus' brother, Elijah (Daniel Gillies), and the mother of his daughter, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), seems to be the show's big romance. As a result, Klaus could get away with remaining a "loner" indefinitely. He has a history of pushing people away and his often erotic behavior is part of what makes him such an interesting character.

For now Klaus' most engaging relationship on the series is perhaps his unique bond with Hayley. Now that she is a hybrid, Klaus has taken her under his wing in a sort of brotherly way. He is her mentor and the fact that they have a child together allows them to maintain a deep connection.

The Originals returns on The CW for the remainder of its second season Monday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
