Beckett (Stana Katic) will officially have a new job title in the upcoming eighth season of ABC's Castle.

'Castle' Star Stana Katic Talks Huge Event In Season 8 That Puts Things In A 'Higher Velocity'

New Castle showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter broke the news at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour that Beckett will receive quite the promotion. According to TVLine, Beckett will be the new captain of the precinct, replacing Captain Gates (Penny Johnson Jerald).

"At the end of the day, we came into this season wanting to shake things up," Hawley said, of the job change. "The show has been doing a great job with what's its been doing, but now we've been given an opportunity to really sort of add some energy into it."

Is Jack Coleman Returning To 'Castle'?

While there were hints of Beckett running for state senate, the showrunners thought it best to keep her and Castle (Nathan Fillion) together.

"What we realized is that the best way to tell Castle's stories is to have Castle investigating twisty, fun cases," Winter said. "And the best way to do that is to keep Beckett in the precinct."

But no matter where Castle and Beckett end up in relation to each other, Hawley admitted that their relationship is what's most important to Castle.

"The important thing to say about [Rick and Kate] is that the show has always been and will always be about their love affair," Hawley said. "But we're looking to add some drama to it, some spark to it. We're going to have fun. It's going to be emotional at times, it will be romantic.... It will be everything."

Castle season 8 premieres Monday, Sept. 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
