NCIS will return next month and the first few episodes are said to be quite gripping, as a doctor will be saving Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) life since he suffered some dangerous gunshot wounds in the season 12 finale.

'NCIS' Season 13 Premiere Episode Officially Titled 'Stop the Bleeding'

Last month, Two and a Half Men actor Jon Cryer popped up on set of NCIS, but not much was given away as it looked like he was just getting a tour of the set.

It turns out his visit to set was because he will be on the series for three episodes as reported by Entertainment Weekly. He is playing the doctor that will save Gibbs.

'NCIS' Has A New DVD Set Out Now Called 'The Best of Abby'

The entertainment site was given a sneak peek picture from a scene in which it looks like Cryer's character is conducting surgery on Gibbs.

Cryer's character is Dr. Taft, who is regarded as a celebrated Navy surgeon.

Cryer dished that Dr. Taft is "kind of the Jeff Goldblum of naval surgeons. Bit of a wisea--. Way too comfortable making jokes in the operating room."

Does this mean viewers will witness Dr. Taft cracking jokes as he operates on Gibbs? It seems like a possibility since the series has been known to mix drama with comedy.

Cryer revealed he's "looking forward to" Dr. Taft's "friendship with Gibbs" since "he's not the kind of guy Gibbs usually takes to."

Cryer also dished that when viewers tune in to see his character saving Gibbs, he will be the only person in the operating room with no real knowledge of what's going on while all the others assisting his character are actually "trained" medical professionals.

"I spent a day working with a surgeon who they ended up hiring to actually assist me during the scene," Cryer explained, adding, "In fact everyone at the operating table with me in the scene was a trained medical professional. So it was only me, the guy who was supposed to be the bada-- doctor, who didn't know what he was doing. I kept thinking 'I played a chiropractor for 12 years, that's gotta count for something!'"

NCIS returns to CBS in the fall on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET.
