The upcoming season has been touted as the final one for MTV's breakout hit Awkward, but showrunner Mike Chessler has since admitted that things may be changing and the series could still come back for a sixth season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Chessler admitted that there would definitely be some closure for the Palos Hills gang at the end of season 5B next year, which picks up one year after their high school graduations, but that plenty of doors are still being left open in case the show makes a comeback.

"In terms of it being the end, it might not be. We don't know about that," he said. "We were just feeling like 5A is the end of the high school chapter of the show, and 5B is a whole new reboot of the show. We finished shooting 5B in July, and we're really excited about how that came out. On the one hand, it's a nice resolution, but on the other hand, it opens a lot of doors, so this may not be the end of the show,"

His co-showrunner, Chris Alberghini, also commented on the possibility, reiterating near the end of the interview that they were strongly pushing towards another season, in an effort to keep fans from feeling dejected that the show was just about over.

"I think we dropped a big enough hint that this may not be the final season, so we just want to make sure that gets heard," he said.

As of now, there has been no official decision on a sixth season, and there is no word on if the cast would all consider making a return if a deal were to be reached between MTV and producers.

Awkward returns Monday, Aug. 31 at 9 p.m. on MTV.
