'Sons of Anarchy' Spinoff: Mayans Motorcycle Club Series Will Be Set In Present Day, Feature 'Familiar' Characters?
Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter recently revealed more details about the highly anticipated spinoff series.
The planned Sons of Anarchy spinoff TV show will center on the Mayans, the motorcycle club that was sometimes an enemy, sometimes an ally to SAMCRO at various points throughout the series.
Sutter spoke with Deadline in a new interview and revealed that the Mayans spinoff will be set in the present day:
"It's the same [biker] subculture, but it'd be interesting to see the influences of [Hispanic] culture and how it impacts the subculture we already understand," Sutter explained. "I would do a contemporary piece, not a prequel, and place it far enough away from Northern California that it wouldn't step on the mythology that's already been told. It doesn't mean that there couldn't be some cool, ironic crossovers with familiar characters as the series progressed. I wouldn't want to set it too close to the world we already know, and step on that ... My intent is, over the hiatus I'll initiate a script for the pilot and take it from there."
Sutter is currently hard at work on The Bastard Executioner, a medieval drama that premieres Tuesday, Sept. 15 on FX. 10 episodes will air this fall.
There is no word on when the Mayans spinoff will air, but Sutter is reportedly planning a limited prequel series to Sons of Anarchy that centers on John Teller and Piney meeting in Vietnam and forming SAMCRO.
