Emma's (Jennifer Morrison) psyche will be explored at "her deepest levels" in season 5 of ABC's Once Upon a Time.
Snow, Charming, Regina & More Traveling To Camelot on 'Once Upon a Time' Next Season?
With Emma surrendering to darkness in the season 4 finale, our heroine will now be shown in a whole new light. As she transfers into becoming the "Dark One", the series will showcase Emma to her depths.
Once Upon a Time co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz spoke with Entertainment Weekly recently about this new storyline.
Henry Will Have His First 'Crush' on 'Once Upon a Time'
"Emma becoming Dark Swan has been a great opportunity for us to explore who she is at her deepest levels and to see those traits exploded in a way," Horowitz said. "That's what the Darkness does to you. It takes who you are and twists it, and that's what we're going to see with Emma."
As for who will be in possession of the dagger, which was last shown with Emma's name on it (left behind after she was swallowed into darkness), it is a mystery.
"I would say who you trust with the dagger is an interesting thing," Kitsis said. "You want to trust the person who has your best interests at heart, but in the same respect, who would you say has the ability to unplug the machine? Meaning who's the person that's going to make the right decision at the right time? Emma's the Dark One, and so who she gives that knife to..."
"Or who takes the knife," Horowitz teased, intriguingly.
"Or who takes the knife has a lot of meaning and emotion but also some practicality to it," Kitsis finished.
Many things will be up in the air with Emma on the dark side. What will become of Rumple (Robert Carlyle) and his darkness? How far will Hook (Colin O'Donoghue), Regina (Lana Parrilla) and her parents go to save her?
Once Upon a Time season 5 premieres Sunday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
