The Sunday two-hour premiere of "Downton Abbey" gave viewers their much desired dosage of Crawley family drama and the added antics surrounding the show's characters.

Here are some highlights from season three's first episode.

While Mary and her fiancé Matthew prepare for their wedding, Lord Crawley hears that his wife Cora's fortune is gone because of a bad investment in a railroad company. At the same time, Matthew learned that he has the chance to become the heir to his late fiancée's father's inheritance, which puts into question his role of being the heir to the Downton estate. Matthew told Mary he could never keep Lavinia's father's fortune and then Mary reveals her own father's financial issues. But Matthew does not step away from his already set plans and after accusing him of being selfish on the night before their wedding, Mary runs away in tears.

Matthew, in an effort to resolve the conflict, talks to Mary with a door between them (so as not to see the bride before the wedding) and the two eventually kiss but with their eyes closed. The wedding went went as planned and the couple was later shown returning from their honeymoon in the south of France.

Before the wedding though, Lady Sybil and her husband Thomas Branson, Lord Crawley's former chauffeur, return to town from Dublin. A a dinner party, Larry Grey, who was at one time a suitor of Sybil's, drugs Branson's drink, which made him appear drunk. Matthew does not mind though, and asks Branson to be his best man at his wedding.

Also at dinner, the Dowager Countess revealed that she was the one who paid for Branson's trip from Dublin to Downton because she wanted them present for Matthew and Mary's wedding. The Dowager Countess might be finally warming up to the fact that her granddaughter is marrying a former servant.

Lady Mary's mother, Martha Levinson, made her way from New York to Donwton Abbey and fans expected much drama out of her. In Sunday's episode, she ultimately saved the dinner party by suggesting an indoor picnic when the stove went out before dinner, inviting the guests to eat whatever they want, wherever they want. She then sang "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."

As far as the other characters, Anna was shown working to free Bates from spending life in prison and Lady Edith continued to pursue a relationship with Lord Anthony.
