'Once Upon a Time' Season 5 News: Will Merida Embrace Darkness Of Her Own Like Emma?
New Once Upon a Time standout Amy Manson talks about her "Brave" character and addresses one fan theory.
Will Merida Be Able To Disobey Emma's Orders To Kill Belle On 'Once Upon a Time'?
Manson, who plays Merida on Once Upon a Time, spoke with Entertainment Weekly this week about the possible darkness within her character. While Merida certainly isn't anywhere close to Emma's (Jennifer Morrison) darkness, she does show a darker side in an upcoming episode.
"It is in episode 9, because that journey is her avenging her father's killer, so in that sense, she goes to a lot of other places to find who killed her father," Manson said, of Merida darkness. "It's just what she does to that person, really, is maybe a dark side of Merida, but nothing like the Dark Swan, nothing in that mental state."

But that doesn't mean Merida hasn't been influenced in a positive way by Emma.
"Oh, in episode 9, she repeats something that Emma has taught her before, so yeah absolutely," Manson said when asked if Merida sees some good in Emma's darkness. "What Emma said to Merida is having an affect on her because she repeats some of her lines from previous episodes."
Manson also spoke to a fan theory that Merida may ultimately develop a romantic relationship with Mulan (Jamie Chung).
"Absolutely not. I was actually on Instagram the other day and there were some of the fans discussing that. It's better just to say what I know about that. But there's talk within the episode of a past relationship, like you said, but not for my character," she confirmed.
Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
