It's nearly time to bid farewell to Clara, and as per usual, Doctor Who has cooked up an ending no one will see coming.

Peter Capaldi (Twelve) spoke to BBC Radio 1 about the impending departure, and his interview shed a little light on the companion's mysterious fate.

"I found it really sad to say goodbye to her ... I don't want to go into what happens, because it's very clever what happens in it, but it's very sad. It's really sad," Capaldi explained. "So get lots of hankies ready. It's sad over a number of weeks."

What catalyst or disaster will plague the TARDIS crew for several episodes? The Doctor Who revival has yet to see any of its companions fall in the line of duty, and Capaldi's statements make it appear as if Clara (Jenna Coleman) will not buck the statistics. Despite season 8's upheaval, the schoolteacher now seems pretty content hopping through time. It would take a lot for her to voluntarily step away from the mad man in the box.

"It's not quite what you think is going to happen. You think what's going to happen is going to happen, and then something else happens," Capaldi teased. "That's what's wonderful about Doctor Who. It's always clever the way these things are done. It's not quite as straightforward as it appears."
