The Blacklist's Liz and Ressler are quickly learning that the best-laid plans really do go awry.

'Scream Queens' Spoilers: The Dead Rise For The Supersized Finale, Who Will Appear?

Red (James Spader) had a way to help secure Liz's (Megan Boone) freedom, but once his life was on the line, the later threw that option right out the window. Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff), too, had a plan to ensure his former colleagues safety, but alas, his machinations came to naught as "Kings of the Highway" came to a deadly close.

Now that Liz is in custody, who will bail her out?

"It's a race against the clock for Red to enact whatever his plan is that he's been working on for the last eight episodes," series creator Jon Bokenkamp explained, according to Entertainment Weekly. "It's time for things to fall together, and that is going to be fun."

What will be even more fun, however, is to see Liz literally swap places with Red. Once occupied by Spader's mastermind, the orange box will now be home to ex-agent Liz Keen.

"She's traded places with Red. Red's now on the outside of the box and she's on the inside," Bokenkamp teased. "It's an interesting dynamic. We're definitely going to put her in there right away."

Oh how the tides have turned for Ms. Keen. Two and a half seasons of aiding Red have really sent her life into a tailspin.

Learn how Liz will recover from this latest set back when The Blacklist returns with "The Director: Part 1" Jan. 7 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
