Sleepy Hollow's Abbie Mills made the ultimate sacrifice as the midseason finale came to an end, and it's a move that will have fans buzzing all winter long.

Crane (Tom Mison) and Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) are safe - or as safe as you can be in Sleepy Hollow - but Nicole Beharie's Abbie has succumbed to the Grim Reaper. Death is a tricky creature in the world of the supernatural, and fans are already hoping against hope that Team Witness won't let the final moments of "Novus Ordo Seclorum" go unchallenged.

Showrunner Clifton Campbell, however, isn't ready to tease a miraculous resurrection.

"I don't want to tell the audience how they should be looking at it," a cryptic Clifton informed Variety. "I think, like all of us, they should enjoy the episode for what it's worth and embrace the sacrifice that Abbie Mills makes, not only for her sister but for Crane and this world that they're inhabiting, and just be utterly and completely surprised at how everybody reacts to this gigantic sacrifice that she makes."

If you are expecting Jenny to throw caution to the winds while Crane plots the most rational course of action, you might want to reconsider. Their situations will be very much reversed.

While Jenny now has Joe (Zach Appelman) to ground her, it will be Crane who enters the spring season with guns blazing.

"This loss is not like any of the other losses in his life - Katrina, his son, any of the loss of his family will pale in comparison to the devastation, and therefore the recklessness, that we see Crane come back with," Clifton teased. "It reframes him in a very unique and interesting way."

Sleepy Hollow will return to Fox on Feb. 5.
