It's one of the most popular shows in the world and often tops lists as such, but a shocking new claim has emerged that seeks to unseat Game of Thrones as the most popular show in the world.

'Game of Thrones' Finally Addresses Jon Snow's Fate

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix's head of content acquisition Ted Sarandos believes the streaming service's show Narcos, which recently ranked as number two in a major survey, is actually the one that earns the top spot, because the surveys don't account for all kinds of devices.

"We're pleased to take the number two spot, but think it's number one because they don't measure all the devices," he said.

He also revealed that the show's popularity was because of it's multinational components and international appeal, something that he seemed to indicate that Game of Thrones didn't quite have.

"Eighty-five percent [of dialogue] is in Spanish," he said. "it's produced by a French company, shot in Colombia with Brazilian stars and hugely popular in Germany. This is the first flavor of what global television can be."

Narcos follows the story of drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Game of Thrones is based off George R.R. Martin's book series, which follows the fight for control over a fictional land known as Westeros, as several families fight to retain control of the throne.
