'The Amazing Race' Season 27 Winners: Kelsey & Joey Dish On Their Win & That Fight With The Paparazzi [VIDEO]
It seemed as if they were destined to always be second during The Amazing Race, but Kelsey and Joey managed to stay cool and win where it counted on the show's final leg.
How Did Justin/Diana and Logan/Chris React To Kelsey & Joey's Win?
The two, who finished in second place five legs in a row, managed to overcome their main competitors, Justin and Diana, in the final leg and cross the finish line first, winning $1 million and the ability to officially call themselves champions. However, in a post-race interview with Entertainment Weekly, the two did acknowledge that they didn't get there without a struggle--particularly the one that may have sealed their fate.
After the first roadblock on Randalls Island in New York City, the couple did get into their first--and really only altercation with another team--when the Paparazzi attempted to steal their cab to get to Belmont Park. However, the two were right there and managed to succeed at keeping the others from successfully hijacking it.
Kelsey & Joey Win 'The Amazing Race'
"...We had just been in the cab...we just had to go drop off Joey's fire boots, so we literally were out of the cab for maybe 30, 45 seconds, and then I see the cab door shut. So we start booking after it, and there was no way, there was no possibility that cab was going anywhere. We would have been standing in front of the cab, knocking the doors down..." Kelsey said.
"They would have had to run me over to get that cab," Joey added. "The driver was also very confused, like, 'Who are these two other people in my cab?' And then we're running up, yelling, and I just lost it. We hadn't been in any confrontations in this entire season, but I knew this was a pivotal moment where there was no way that could happen."
The two also admitted that part of their strategy--which paid off and kept them just enough in the lead ahead of both Justin and Diana and Logan and Chris, who had to take buses back to Manhattan in order to find new cabs--involved not paying the driver until they knew they didn't need him anymore, which worked in their favor.
The pair also talked about how being on the show only helped to strengthen their commitment to one another, and their relationship, as well.
"I think we went into it knowing we were in love, that we were in a solid relationship, but we made it the entire race, through all 10 countries without really getting in a fight--and I was surprised," Kelsey said. "Because we don't know what we'd be like with 24/7 of being together, but we actually loved it, and it was hard to even separate when it was over."
Season 28 of The Amazing Race premieres in February.
