There was a large amount of outcry after fan favorite character Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) was raped by new husband Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) on her wedding night during season 5 of Game of Thrones, and now, it appears the show is choosing to take a different approach to those kinds of scenes in season 6.

Is Another Show More Popular Than 'Game of Thrones?'

In a new interview, the director of the episode "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken," Jeremy Podeswa said that the creators of the show have since taken criticism over that particular scene to heart, and kept it in mind while filming the show's current season, leading to some slightly more toned down scenes.

"We were aware ahead of time that it was going to be disturbing but we did not expect there would be people in Congress talking about it," Podeswa said. "It was a difficult and brutal scene and we knew it was going to be challenging for the audience, but it was very important to us in the execution that it would not be exploited in any way."

Did 'Game of Thrones' Finally Address Jon Snow's Fate?

"To be fair, the criticism was the notion of it, not the execution. It was handled as sensitively as it could possibly be; you could hardly see anything," he added.

However, he also went on to say that the show would do things a little differently in the new season because of the backlash.

"It is important that (the producers) not self-censor. The show depicts a brutal world where horrible things happen," he said. "They did not want to be too overly influenced by that (criticism) but they did absorb and take it in and it did influence them in a way. [The show creators] were responsive to the discussion and there were a couple of things that changed as a result."

Game of Thrones season 6 premieres in April 2016.
