In a dream battle between two of the world's most prestigious football clubs, Real Madrid will take on Manchester United in a Champions League matchup on Wednesday.

The game will feature Real Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo taking on United for the first time since leaving in 2009. However, another key storyline will be the clash between the two sides' skippers, who have a deep history and a fascinating relationship.

Jose Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson first met one another when the young Portuguese man angered United's manager due to his then squad Porto's theatrics in their Champions League last-16 tie in 2004.

In the second-leg at Old Trafford, Porto had pulled an upset and eliminated United. In celebration, Mourhino began charging down the touchline with his players, which didn't bode well with Ferguson at the time.

Although Mourhino topped Ferguson yet again when he went on to coach at Chelsea, the two have since developed an unlikely friendship. They not only share a taste in wine, but also a relentless desire for victory.

As of late, Ferguson even suggested that the Madrid skipper be the one to replace him when he eventually retires, according to International Business Times.

Whether Mourhino decides to take over for the United manager or not, it appears almost certain that he'll depart Madrid at the season's end.

However, if he does end up leaving Real without a Champions League title, then he'll more than likely consider his time at the Bernabeu as a failure, despite winning the La Liga crown last season.

Nonetheless, Mourhino has a shot to make the record books, as he has the opportunity to be the first skipper to take home the European Cup with three different teams.
