FX's American Horror Story may have saved Lady Gaga's creative life.

'American Horror Story' Star Denis O'Hare Brings Clarity Regarding 'Hotel' Episode Count

Gaga, who plays The Countess on American Horror Story: Hotel, recently spoke with James Franco for V Magazine and discussed why being on the show was so important to her.

As it turns out, the pop superstar-turned-actress was admittedly "miserable" before she began acting in the series.

'American Horror Story' Star Matt Bomer Talks Lady Gaga's Invaluable Career Advice

"When I wasn't working on the show I was truly miserable because I had no safe house to get out any of my vices," she said, via Yahoo. "Now I have a safe house for my vices so when I'm making music I just have a lot more clarity. I have a little less of an instinct to be reckless with my music now because I'm reckless in other places."

Her role required sex scenes, violence and many complex, emotional scenes. For her efforts, Gaga received a Golden Globe nomination in addition to some inspiration for her next album.

"I'm thinking more about what it is I want to say and what I want to leave on Earth. It's less an expression of all my pain," Gaga admitted. "There will be some of my pain on the record for sure, but it will be more than that. My last album [Artpop] was riddled with a ton of pain. That whole record. It's almost like you couldn't even get to what it is. Now, the show gives me an outlet to put things somewhere, so when I get to the piano I'm in a deeper place already. I have something completely other to explore."

It remains to be seen if Gaga will return to American Horror Story next year, though based on her comments here, it seems like a no-brainer if Ryan Murphy and company want her back.

American Horror Story: Hotel airs its finale Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
