It appears that another major legacy character could be making an exit from Days of Our Lives.

Following a 2015 that saw the deaths of major characters Will Horton and Bo Brady-at the hands of serial killer Ben and a deadly brain tumor respectively-and a 2016 that already saw the death of Dr. Daniel Jonas in a horrific car accident, it appears that DiMera family patriarch Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) has also been taken out-at the hands of a vengeful Hope (Kristian Alfonso), who knows he ordered the torture that Bo received for two years, which delayed his getting treatment for the tumor when it mattered, leading to his death not long after he returned to Salem.

News had been swirling for a little while that a major character from Days of Our Lives would be murdered in cold blood during the New Year, with reports previously suggesting it could be Stefano because Mascolo was allegedly forced to retire from the show. Now, it appears those rumors are true, as he appeared to die following multiple gunshot wounds to his chest after Hope finally had enough of his continually taunting her.

If Stefano is dead-for real this time-it would mean that more characters than believed would be exiting the soap, which will see more big characters leaving as the new year progresses. Following the accident, Eric (Greg Vaughan) is also expected to make an exit following the actor's being fired. That will likely occur in the coming weeks if Eric wakes up from his coma following the accident and is prosecuted and sent off to prison for his role in the deadly crash. In addition, Abigail (Kate Mansi) is also going to exit the series by mid-year, following Mansi's decision not to renew her contract.

It is unclear how the Abigail character will be written out, or if a recast will occur.

Days of Our Lives airs Monday-Friday at 1 p.m. on NBC.
