Loyalists of the AMC hit The Walking Dead were initially fretting when Daryl made the decision to leave the group and go off on his own with corrupt brother Merle.

However, to the excitement of the fans, the younger Dixon found that life without a group and with his calculating older sibling is harder than it seems.

Not only did Daryl not see eye to eye with Merle, but necessities were scarce and safety was an issue in the woods.

When the Dixons approached a family being mutilated by walkers on a bridge, Daryl was quick to assist while Merle didn't see a point in helping others if he received nothing out of it.

Upon warding off the zombies for the family, Merle decided it was more than fair to attempt to rob them. However, Daryl insisted he leave the family alone while raising his crossbow.

A fight occurred afterwards, which made the younger Dixon realize that the pastures were indeed greener with Rick and the rest of the prison group.

In a new interview conducted with Entertainment Weekly on Feb. 17, showrunner Glen Mazzara spoke about the initial outrage he received at the hands of fans who assumed that Daryl had been written off the show.

"Last week on Twitter, they were saying 'Curse you, Glen Mazzara, you've written Daryl out of the show! He's off the show now because he left with Merle.' And I'm just thinking, no, he's off walking around the woods until he figures out his brother's a jerk and he comes back at just the perfect heroic moment to save Rick."

Mazzara also touched on the recent death of Axel, stating that the prisoner didn't die a painful death and that there could've been a possibility of romance between him and Carol.

"Yeah, He didn't know what hit him. He's telling a story and says 'One time...' and he's hit. And you know what? If that bullet didn't come, maybe there would have been a nice little romance with Axel and Carol. Because I think she really was enjoying the conversation. And it was nice to see her somewhat happy."

The Walking Dead will next air on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
