'Doctor Who' Season 10: Could Eight Return? Paul McGann Speaks Out

Twelve won't step back into the TARDIS until May, but when filming does commence, showrunner Steven Moffat is hopeful that the series may be in line to film more than the usual order.

"I know that what I've signed on to do is 13 more episodes of Doctor Who - including a Christmas special," Moffat told Digital Spy. "I'm trying to argue for slightly more than that, but we'll see. It's all in action, it's not that long away. It's really close."

Season 9 doled out a surfeit of two-part episodes, but the 2016 run will leave that structure behind.

"Each year, we try to do something different - almost out of perversity, to make things more difficult for ourselves - so that we're not getting into a groove, we're not becomingly boringly expert at it, because there's nothing so boring as when you get slick," Moffat told Doctor Who Magazine. "I was very happy to get rid of two-parters when I did, and [in Season 9 I was] very happy to bring them back."
