Kathy Bates Joins 'American Horror Story' Season 3 as Jessica Lange Enemy, VIDEO
Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange will play friends who become the worst of enemies in the third season of FX's American Horror Story, according to Yahoo.
Bates will reunite with Lange seven years after they starred together in the movie Bonneville. She will also star alongside Frances Conroy, whom she appeared with in the HBO series Six Feet Under. Bates won the Best Actress Oscar in 1990 for her performance as nurse Annie in Misery. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga and Lily Rabe - who were in the first two seasons of the show - will also feature in season three.
"Kathy's never [played] someone this bad. Her [character] is a bad, bad woman!" American creator Ryan Murphy said to TV Line. He added that Bates playing Lange's enemy is "five times worse than [her] 'Misery' character -- which is why she liked it."
"When I pitched this to Kathy, her mouth was drop-jawed because what I was pitching actually happened," he said "It's a true event. You'll see. It's some good stuff."
Lange was in fact the way to suggest bringing Bates on board for the show. Murphy said she told in in season one that Bates was a huge fan of the show.
"So I just put that in the back of my mind," he explained. "When we were crafting this season, I found this character - a true-life character - so I called Kathy...she called me in an hour and said, 'I love it! I'll do it!' It was great."
American Horror Story first aired on FX in 2011 and with each season the story, characters and setting change. Some cast members stay, including Lange, however, they play entirely different characters. The show won a Golden Globe and Lange received an Emmy Award.
American Horror Story returns for its third season in fall 2013.
