'The X-Files' 2016: What Did Margret's Last Words Really Mean? Writer Glen Morgan Explains
The X-Files Margaret Scully left her death bead with a very pointed statement.
Scully's (Gillian Anderson) life was thrown into emotional chaos as her mother lay dying in "Home Again," and Margret's (Sheila Larken) desire to connect with her estranged son left Dana plagued by memories of William. Just as Charlie Scully hadn't spoken to his mother for years, Dana has not seen her little boy since she gave him up for adoption in season 9.
It was Mulder (David Duchovny), however, who was left wondering about their son as the episode came to a close. Just before Mrs. Scully went off into the great unknown, she regain consciousness just long enough to say, "My son is named William, too."

So, what did her dying words really mean? According to writer Glen Morgan, it was a reminder to Mulder to get his life in order.
"I thought it was a little bit of a challenge to Mulder," Morgan told Entertainment Weekly. "I think that Maggie was very squared away with Dana...I think that she would know that Scully would figure things out, and Mulder was the one that kind of needed a little 'Is your life in order?' kind of question."
The statement serves as a message to Scully as well. As the agent attempts to puzzle out her Margaret's words, Morgan told TV Insider it will also help to "fuel another mystery."
