Dying on Quantico doesn't necessarily mean you're out of the story for good.

The ABC drama exists in both the past and the present, a clever trick that allows those who die in the Grand Central time line to remain active in the Academy time line. As the midseason premiere begins, viewers will learn that over 30 people perished in the command center explosion. At least one of these casualties will continue to play an active role back at Quantico.

"What I will say is that somebody who doesn't survive the explosion you will still be seeing in the Quantico timeline," executive producer Josh Safran told Entertainment Weekly.

At the same time, the drama will confine some academy newbies to the past. Alex (Priyanka Chopra) will meet three second-year students this spring, but Olsen (Jay Armstrong Johnson), Iris (Li Jun Li) and Drew (Lenny Platt) won't figure into the future storyline.

"One of the things that has happened in the back [half of the season], which I think is a good thing, is that characters are no longer required to play on both sides of the story," Safran told Entertainment Weekly. "It's almost like having two different shows that are tied together."
