'Game of Thrones' Season 6 News: HBO Takes Shocking New Measures To Keep Spoilers From Leaking [PHOTO]
Don't count on a repeat of 2015 where half of Game of Thrones' upcoming season leaked online before its premiere.
What Character Will Be Involved In The Shocking Twist In 'The Winds of Winter?'
In an effort to combat the enormously high amounts of piracy and leaks that have surrounded the show in the past, HBO has decided that with the highly anticipated sixth season of the show just around the corner, they will not release any screeners to the press ahead of time-the first time they have done so for the series.
"We're not sending our press copies this year, anywhere in the world," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo told Entertainment Weekly. "There will be no copies for review."
What The New Posters Reveal About Season 6
The move doesn't come as overly surprising after the first four episodes were leaked online when screeners were sent out for review last year-meaning key plot points including the deaths of Mance Rayder and Ser Barristan Selmy were revealed to fans before they had the chance to watch the episodes live.
It also makes sense because for the first time in the series' history, the content of the new season will also be surpassing the source material from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books, meaning even book fans can't spoil what happens next. With that-and the huge questions over whether or not Jon Snow (Kit Harington) is really dead or not-as well as the issue which arose last year, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss requested that the advanced screeners not be released.
"It's painful for Dan and David [when leaks happen]," Lombardo said. "When you have press copies, inevitably friends ask, 'Can I see your copy?' There are things that happen. We talked about the upsides and downsides. Some of the press are fans who might be disappointed, but they'll understand."
Game of Thrones season 6 premieres April 24 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
