'Days of Our Lives' News: Show's Production Shuts Down Despite Renewal, Why Series Isn't Filming [PHOTO]
There was a lot of concern that after a big 50th anniversary celebration it could be on the brink of cancellation, but despite being renewed by NBC for another year, Days of Our Lives has still temporarily shut down production.
According to Soap Central, the show has shut down for the next five weeks, with a planned return to the sets in early April. No reason has been given for a hiatus specifically, though the show is likely taking the extended vacation because their production schedule allows them to do so when the two-week preemption they will face this August in favor of the Summer Olympics in Rio is factored in.
Since the show operates with a production schedule that is half a year ahead however, the hiatus does not mean episodes will be interrupted now, and are still scheduled to air. The vacation likely accommodates the cast for the Olympic break, and when they return in April, they should be resuming where they left off.
The show has seen plenty of turmoil in recent months between the near-cancellation of the show, which was on the brink before the 50th anniversary re-energized the series. Those episodes saw a successful arc involving a serial killer, and the returns of many legacy characters for guest appearances and more permanent stays. Other storylines-including the death of Daniel Jonas, have also helped reenergize the soap. It was eventually renewed, though one of the members of the writing team chose to leave the show for other opportunities.
Days of Our Lives airs Monday-Friday at 1 p.m. on NBC.
