'Castle' Season 8 News: Showrunners Preparing For Possible Cancellation? [VIDEO]
The producers of ABC's Castle are reportedly filming two different endings for their upcoming finale.
ABC renewed 15 of their shows in March, including Once Upon a Time, Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Quantico and Dancing With the Stars, but Castle was curiously missing from that list. Currently in its eighth season, Castle has reached the point of stars Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic having to renew their contracts every year, and it remains unclear if they have done so or will do so this year.
As such, Castle producers are preparing for either renewal or cancellation by possibly filming two different endings for the season 8 finale, according to TVLine. One ending would serve as a regular season finale, while the other would function as a series finale - which would probably have a more satisfying conclusion.
The finale is expected to address the LokSat case again, with Kristofer Polaha returning to reprise his role as Caleb Brown. ABC has announced Monday, May 16 as the season 8 finale.
Castle co-showrunner Alexi Hawley previously spoke with TVGuide.com about the possibility of going further with the show, even with lead characters Castle and/or Beckett gone. Hopefully, as Hawley said, it won't have to come to that.
"If we had our choice, it would be the same cast, it would be the same show," Hawley said. "We've done some fun stuff this year so that it has a little different energy that could absolutely carry through to a Season 9. But both of us are very invested in this, and we understand that Castle has always been about Beckett and Castle. So the idea of that not happening is daunting, and we're rooting against that."
He added: "LokSat is definitely getting resolved at the end of this year. Our hope was to take all the threads-the conspiracies, Sen. Bracken, Castle's missing time-and really tie them off in a compelling, satisfying way, so that in Season 9 we can tell really compelling standalone stories and leave the conspiracy part of it behind. I think ultimately those stories are about played-out."
Castle airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
