AMC's The Walking Dead continues to draw in viewers by the boatload. To top it off, it's now the most watched cable drama in the history of television.

As the popular series gets closer to this weekend's season three finale, two groups of survivors will inevitably engage in a full-on war, as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the prison group look to take out the Governor (David Morrissey) and the town of Woodbury.

"We have two ghettoized communities fighting for their lives. If only they could join forces, but egos are not allowing them to," David Morrissey told USA Today.

Rick, who has spent the brunt of the season hallucinating over his deceased wife Lori, has seemed to regain his composure just in time to stand up strong against the Governor. In the last few episodes, he's re-emerged as an effective group leader.

"It's nice to be a** kicking again. Rick is a leader. He needs to be in action, saving people," Lincoln explained.

Show creator Robert Kirkman explained this season's story arc, and how the action is written to hone in on the main conflict, which is the Governor versus Rick.

"The episodes are all about ramping up the conflict between the Governor and Rick. It's about finding out where allegiances lie. There are a few surprises in store as to who is going to be doing what on which side. Those reveals are going to be startling."

While there are no new spoilers to report at this time, AMC had released a handful of official high-resolution still shots for its upcoming installment, which is titled Welcome to the Tombs.

One of the pics shows Carl (Chandler Riggs) admiring his father's old police badge. Since Carl hasn't had much airtime in the last few episodes, it seems logical that he'll play a meaty role in the finale.

Another still reveals Rick equipped with a machine gun and an unknown person's hands can be seen in the darkness behind him (out of view).

However, the unidentified individual could very well be Daryl (Norman Reedus), who appears in another still alongside Rick and Michonne (Dunai Gurira).

The Walking Dead season three-finale episode is set to air on Sunday, March 31 at 9 p.m. EDT on the AMC network. A sneak peek of the upcoming show can be viewed below.
