While AMC's The Walking Dead surely delivered to its fans in terms of its season three finale, its loyalists must now wait it out until the fall for its fourth installment.

While many were sad to see the deaths of Milton (Dallas Roberts) and Andrea (Laurie Holden), it was the show's villain that didn't die that surprised many, The Governor (David Morrissey).

The Hollywood Reporter stated that Morrissey will indeed make his return to The Walking Dead as a principal actor.

While Morrissey was initially inked for just one season, comic book writer/ executive producer Robert Kirkman had already indicated to the site that he'd rather abstain from having a new bad guy for every season.

Many had assumed that The Governor would be killed off in the season finale, but he along with his two henchman, Martinez and Bowman, disappeared from the scene unscathed.

The Welcome to the Tombs episode started off with The Governor torturing Milton and telling him that he's not leaving the Woodbury torture chamber without killing Andrea, either as a living human being or a dead walker.

Meanwhile, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the rest of the group made plans to leave the prison in lieu of an anticipated attack by Woodbury. He seemed to be remorseful over his initial decision to sacrifice Michonne (Danai Gurira) to the Governor for the rest of the group's safety.

However, she claimed that she understood his motivations for saving the group, and thanked Rick for taking her in the prison. He said that if it weren't for Carl (Chandler Riggs), that they wouldn't have.

Led by the Governor, the Woodbury group launched an attack on the prison while the group sat back in the woods and witnessed it. They soon moved in and the Governor's group retreated.

Carl wasn't as generous this time around, as he killed a young Woodbury fighter who appeared as if her were surrendering.

Upon reaching Woodbury and meeting up with Tyrese (Chad L. Coleman), Rick, Daryl and Michonne find a dead Milton, but also find a bitten Andrea. Due to her inevitable fate, Andrea made the decision to kill herself rather than turn into a biter. Rick gives her the gun and the fatal gunshot can be heard.

The Walking Dead is slated to air an all-new fourth season in October.
