'NCIS: LA' Season 8: Actors Were 'Terrified' Of The Densi Storyline, Find Out Why It Succeeded [VIDEO]
If you asked NCIS: Los Angeles' Eric Christian Olsen and Daniela Ruah two years ago if Deeks and Kensi would ever get together, their answer would have been an unequivocal "No." Now, as the actors prepare for season 8, they can't imagine a world where Densi didn't exist.
LAPD Detective Marty Deeks (Olsen) and NCIS Special Agent Kensi Blye (Ruah) partnered up back in season 1, and it wasn't long before their sexual tension was apparent to all involved. Unlike the creative minds behind NCIS' Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote De Pablo), the LA powers that be shocked actors and delighted viewers when they decided to embrace the burgeoning Densi romance in season 6.
"Everyone was terrified in television that once you put them together it's going to fall apart," Olsen explained to fans at MCM Comic Con in London.
Even Ruah thought the pairing was doomed from to fail. Once the scripts started rolling in, however, the star quickly realized that Densi was destined to become more than a little romantic speedbump.
"Literally a couple of days before we got that script where [Deeks and Kensi] make it official - the Christmas episode of season 6, I believe, was when the characters officially got together - and literally a few days before that I had done an interview [saying I thought] it was going to be a will-they-won't-they because once you put them together it going to be, 'Where do you do from there? It's done,'" Ruah explained. "I was so, so wrong. There's plenty of places to go because now [there are] these feelings, these emotions, and these potential obstacles," the actress continued."
In the last few episodes of season 7 alone, Densi vacillated between the serious (contemplating parenthood in a dangerous world) and the comedic (dealing with the ups and downs of living together). One scene that stood out for Olsen was Deeks attempt to escape Kensi's cluttered bathroom. His plan backfired, however, when his girlfriend found him showering at work, prompting them to interrupt their high-adrenaline workday with a little light banter (see video below).
"What a wonderful conversation to have on that show where these characters are off saving the world everyday but are also dealing with the fact that they're two people trying to make it work and she has so many hair products!" Olsen laughed. "That's real, and I think that's a really interesting balance that we couldn't play before because we couldn't put the characters together."
Parenthood doesn't appear to be in Deeks and Kensi's immediate future, but marriage may very well be in the cards. Look for the Densi 'ship to evolve even further when NCIS: LA returns for season 8.
