'Making a Murderer' News: Dean Strang Reveals How You Can Impact The Justice System [VIDEO]
Many Netflix users were drawn into and frustrated by Making a Murderer, and some are still wondering what they can do next.
Making a Murderer captivated the nation when it dropped last December on Netflix. The documentary series shows the process of Wisconsin native Steven Avery's convictions, both of which featured suspicious circumstances regarding ethics within the justice system. The series arguably leaves things in a rather unsatisfying manner, with Avery still in prison and his attorneys feeling frustrated with the justice system.
Yet, all hope is not lost. Dean Strang, who was one of Avery's defense attorneys and was seen frequently throughout the series, has a few things you can do if you want to see good change in the world.
"Start with the power of the story you've been told," Strang said in a new Fusion interview, when asked what viewers should do next. "Stories are powerful to us. We remember them. They move us. Our brains are oriented around fashioning facts into a coherent story. Start with that in a given case. Recognize, now, that about twenty million criminal cases are brought every year in this country. And then start to look for probable commonalities between a story that moves you, and the unknown stories of millions of other people who also are enmeshed in the criminal justice system."
Strang strongly recommends supporting groups that are working on cases that mean something to you, whether it be through social media or donations.
"We're really rich with groups that are working on justice in this country," he said. "So whatever it is that specifically moves you, there are groups out there working on that issue, and they need your time, they need your involvement on social media, they need your money if you have it, and other forms of support."
Strang also stressed the continued importance of having your vote count.
"In most states, we elect judges. In every state, we elect sheriffs. In every state, we elect prosecutors. So people can and should pay more attention to those elections, and participate in them thoughtfully," he suggested.
Making a Murderer is available to stream now on Netflix.
