The sixth season of FX's American Horror Story is reportedly going to be the shortest one yet.

It looks like American Horror Story is doing things differently this season. There is a new report courtesy of SpoilerTV that says season 6 will only have 10 episodes, a shorter run than the usual 12-13 episodes.

This news comes after the recent FX announcement that season 6 of American Horror Story would premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 14. This too is a diversion from the usual, considering the first five seasons of American Horror Story debuted in October of their respective years.

On top of all of this, showrunner Ryan Murphy still hasn't announced the concept for season 6. This is perhaps the biggest difference of all, considering fans learned the concept of past seasons as early as February or March in previous years. With a little over two months until the premiere, it's looking like the show's producers are keeping their plans close to the vest.

Some cast members have confirmed their returns for season 6, including Angela Bassett, Evan Peters, Matt Bomer, Finn Wittrock and Cheyenne Jackson, but character information is pretty much unknown to the public.

So what's the reason for the shortened episode order? It's possibly a reaction to the lower ratings American Horror Story: Hotel received compared to other seasons. FX might want to soften the blow of fading ratings by only having 10 episodes. However, the show is still one of the biggest currently airing on FX so it's unclear if that's really the case.

It could also be a creative decision on the part of the producers. The show has occasionally struggled with filling out 12-13 episodes per year, so having only 10 episodes could tighten up the season and make for a better cohesive story overall.

American Horror Story season 6 debuts Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
