The dysfunctional Pfefferman family will experience love and loss in the upcoming third season of Amazon's Transparent.

Amazon released a plot synopsis and trailer for season 3 of Transparent, the company's groundbreaking original series about a 70-year-old transgender woman named Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) and her equally complicated L.A. family. When the series left off in season 2, Maura found companionship with a woman named Vicki (Anjelica Huston), and this connection will develop in season 3.

"In 'Transparent' season three, our nuclear family splinters into disparate journeys on their continued path of self-discovery," the Amazon plot synopsis reads. "After a jarring reality check, Maura, having found romantic partnership with Vicki and acceptance from her family, seeks to become the woman she envisions through gender confirmation surgery."

Meanwhile, Maura's children, Sarah (Amy Landecker), Ali (Gaby Hoffmann) and Josh (Jay Duplass) will be trying to live their authentic selves. Season 3 will feature Sarah creating her own "East Side religious movement", as her narcissism reaches new extremes. Ali will begin questioning "her career path and her relationship" with Leslie Mackinaw (Cherry Jones).

As for Josh, he will apparent suffer a "harrowing loss" in his life, which "Forces him to reconcile with his past once more and for all."

Then there's Maura's ex-wife Shelly (Judith Light). Shelly has found love again with Buzz (Richard Masur), who was introduced late in season 2. This relationship continues into season 3, where she "finally discovers her voice - she's going to tell her side of the story whether her family likes it or not."

As the Amazon synopsis reads, "All paths converge on a family cruise to Mexico, affirming that though their family history is murky, each Pfefferman is their truest self when they come together."

Season 3 of Transparent will be released in full on Friday, Sept. 23 on Amazon. The first two seasons are available to stream now.
